[ɪntə'næʃnl 'weɪlɪȖ kə'mɪʃn], Abkürzung IWC [aɪdʌbljuː'siː], deutsch Internationale Walfang-Kommission, gegründet 1946 zur Einführung von Schutzmaßnahmen für Wale. 1982 wurde ein allgemeines Fangverbot von 1986 an ausgesprochen, welches jedoch von einigen Ländern durch weitgehende Auslegung von Ausnahmeregelungen umgangen wird. Durch Aktivitäten der IWC wurde der Handel mit Produkten besonders gefährdeter Wale eingeschränkt. Seit Dezember 1994 ist auf einer Fläche von etwa 21 Mio km2 rund um die Antarktis ein Walschutzgebiet eingerichtet worden (Walfang).
